What sports are best played on the beach? Here are the top three:
Beach Tennis
This is a fun mix of tennis, badminton, and volleyball, but it’s played on the beach, of course. It’s a much simpler game than actual tennis, making it ideal for children and adults to play together. Once the ball hits the ground, the point is over. You can play a match of three sets, or simply go as long as you like and count the winner of each match.
To set up for beach tennis, you’ll need paddle rackets for each person, low compression tennis balls, and a beach tennis net and lines. These are usually set up lower than regular volleyball nets, so it’s a good idea to get a new one for this sport.
Handball
In this sandy version of handball, you’ll have two teams rolling and bouncing a ball, or passing it, to get in the opposing team’s goal. The addition of a sandy beach makes this sport far more challenging and it is an excellent workout.

Volleyball
This is one of the traditional beach sports and it’s still a favourite among nearly everyone who enjoys playing in the sand. Two teams hit the ball back and forth over a centred net, trying to hit the ground on the opponent side of the net.
For beach volleyball, you need a brightly coloured volleyball and a net that can be stretched between two posts. This tends to be set higher than the usual handball net. Often, the posts are already set up at the beach, so you’ll just need the net, but if you’re going to a place that is less transited, you should bring your own posts.
Each of these sports is designed to make playing on the beach a lot more fun. For all of them, you need minimal equipment and can enjoy a game with strangers or friends as long as you bring along a few useful items. Nets and balls tend to be simple enough to tuck into a boot or backpack, so you can easily enjoy the game wherever you go.
