Whether you are a groundsman, olympian, or keen amateur wanting to push your passion for badminton further, setting up your own court is a great move. Sure, there is a lot to consider, but it shouldn’t be a daunting experience. After all, once you’re finished, you’ll be able to smash a shuttlecock around your shiny new court!
Here is Sportsmark’s guide to setting up your own court.
Location
Above all else, one of the most important elements to consider in the initial stages of the project is the location of the court. Whether your court is indoors or outdoors is important when making decisions such as net type, lighting and coverings.
Once you’ve settled on the rough location of your court, you’ll want to be sure there is enough space for the setup. Ideally, your court will meet the standardised dimensions of 44ft in length by 20ft in width. The minimum area of ground required for safe play is 1,620 square feet, so this is a good point to aim for.
Surfacing
If you’re setting up a court at a sports centre or club, it is likely that you’ll be opting for wooden or synthetic flooring. Both of which are good and have their own merits. Wooden court floors are great for shock absorption as they are often placed on layers of matting. They are also durable and waterproof, making them perfect for excessive usage.
If you’re setting up a backyard court, you may be sticking with your garden’s natural surface, grass. This is fine to do as long as you ensure the ground is as flat as possible, with no stones or uneven bumps. You should also try to keep the grass as short as possible, trimming it regularly.
Boundaries And Markings
Marking your boundary lines correctly is essential in the making of your court. Depending on your ground surface, you may want to lay them out initially using chalk, paint or tape. We also recommend using a good quality glass fibre measuring tape to ensure accurate dimensions for your court.
At Sportsmark, we also have portable fibre-bonded courts available. These are great for placing over sub-standard surfaces and in situations where permanent markings aren’t an option.
The Net
Of course, the most important element of any good badminton court is its net. Choosing a high-quality net with a durable cable and sturdy posts is a must.
Consider whether your net is going to be a permanent fixture, or if you’ll need to remove it and store it away. Wheelaway bases are a great option for courts in shared facilities or outdoors, as they can easily be set up and taken down after use.
